Colin Hepburn (class of 2010) Won Gold & Helped Set a New World Record in the IAAF World Youth Championships

Congratulations to Colin Hepburn (class of 2010) who represent the United States at the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy last week. Colin's sprint medley relay team (Colin Hepburn; Keenan Brock; Dedric Dukes; Joshua Mance) competed for the USA, won the gold and set a new WORLD RECORD at 1:50.33! Colin ran the 100 meter leg of the sprint medley relay (10.4 s split) for the United States Youth and competed in the 100 meter dash.

In addition, on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 Colin took third in the 7th Heat of the prelims and qualified for the next round. See the results at the IAAF World Website.

Colin ran with some of the best runners in the world and represented the USA well. Congratulations from GBS!

Congratulations to Colin Hepburn (class of 2010)!!! Colin qualified by winning 2nd place in the 100m sprint with a time of 10.58 seconds in the Team USA Track and Field finals and was chosen to represent the United States at the 2009 IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy in July.

GBS Sophomore Wins National Art Competition

Congratulations to our very own Glenbrook South sophomore student, Inhwan Choi , who was awarded FIRST PLACE in the nation at the National Great Frame Up Creative Self-Expression Art Show for her Painting of "The Clown" done in Ms. Self's Painting 2 class!

Inhwan competed with more than 1,000 students from all around the country for the first place $2,000 scholarship prize. Along side this unbelievable accomplishment, she will be traveling out to California to meet actress/artist Jane Seymour (founder of the self-expression show) and accept her first place $2,000 prize!

GBS Honors Students & Staff - Courtyard Vision Now Reality

On Thursday, May 28, 2009, Principal Wegley and Glenbrook South formally thanked Horticulture and Advanced Woods students who designed and beautified the courtyard. A product of the dedication and leadership of state champion Horticulture teacher, Mr. Jeff Yordy, woods teacher Mr. Dave Hill and maintenance electrician, Mr. Dave Molidor, this space will serve generations of students to come.

The gazebo materials were donated by gifts from several senior classes. Numerous friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Walter Lamble made donations to purchase flowers and bushes to complete the landscaping. This work realized Dr. Lamble's vision to create a central location to bring the GBS Family together each year.

Thank you to District 225 Board Members Mr. Joel Taub and Mr. Jeffrey Wolfson who helped celebrate this occasion and to Ms. Bernice Kirchler from the principal's office for working to put this wonderful ceremony together.

The American Association of Teachers of German nationally awards 39 summer study trips of 3.5 weeks in Germany. Winners are chosen based on scores above the 90th percentile from the National German Exam, an extensive application process, and the daunting experience of an interview in German before 4 college professors. Please join us in congratulating Glenbrook South Junior Ellie Van Zanten for winning a coveted study trip award to Germany this summer. Ellie will experience full German immersion, including living with a German family, and attending a German school. Congratulations, Ellie!

GBS Junior Colin Hepburn Claims State Championship in the 100-meter Dash

GBS Boy's Tennis Earns 4th in the IHSA Tournament

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Tennis Team on their fourth place finish at the state tennis tournament this weekend.

Special Recognition to Ben Hoogland who was selected as First Team All State Singles, to Tommy McNichols and Michael Sellitto for their third place finish in doubles and First Team All State Doubles, and to Michael Moore who finished second in singles and First Team All State. Michael Moore was also honored with the Tom Pitchford Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the Athlete who best represents sportsmanship in tennis in the state of Illinois.

GBS's High Schools Against Cancer Club Raises $1000 in the first Taste of South!

GBS's Ellen Chapman Wins IHSA High Jump Title!

Congratulations to sophomore Ellen Chapman who won the state high jump title this weekend for class 3A! Her jump was 5'8", which sets a new school record and was the best jump at the state meet this year by any female athlete.

Congratulations to the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award Winner, Lisa Kivirist. Lisa embodies the growing “ecopreneuring” movement: innovative entrepreneurs who successfully blend business with an ecological concern to make the world a better place. Today a national leader in green business and sustainability issues, Ms. Kivirist credits her Glenbrook South and Glenview roots for sparking her passion for living a life filled with diversity, creativity and a dedication to innovative change.

“My Glenbrook South years gifted me with the opportunity to explore and challenge myself on multiple levels, always supported by top notch teachers, staff and resources,” Ms. Kivirist reflected. At GBS, Ms. Kivirist served as Student Council President, received the Parents’ Association Outstanding Senior Award and was in the first graduating class of the Glenbrook Academy of International Studies. “These strong roots gave me the confidence and commitment to follow my heart and values and realize I wasn’t one to fit into cookie-cutter career paths, leading me to the diversified range of entrepreneurial hats I wear today.”

Ms. Kivirist is co-author, with her husband, John Ivanko, of the award-winning business book, ECOpreneuring: Putting Purpose and the Planet Before Profits. It is a compact, dynamic tool kit with a fresh approach to entrepreneurial thinking, blending passion for protecting and preserving the planet with small business pragmatics. The duo also co-authored Rural Renaissance: Renewing the Quest for the Good Life, capturing the American dream of farm living for contemporary times.

A distinguished W. K. Kellogg Foundation Food & Society Policy Fellow, Ms. Kivirist’s fellowship work focuses on capturing and promoting the story and economic vitality of female farmers and rural entrepreneurs. She directs the Rural Women’s Project, a venture of the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service. GLENBROOK SOUTH TELEVISON WINS SEVERAL STATE AWARDS

Congratulation to students in the Advanced Television Production Class for their outstanding showing at the Chicagoland Student Video Festival.

Mark Helenowski placed THIRD In the TALK SHOW category with his production of TITAN SPORTS.

Mark Helenowski and Kyle Paek, along with Paul Lebryk, placed SECOND in the DOCUMENTARY category with their feature "Behind the Mask.

Also placing SECOND were Matt Krueger for his news story on the Electric Car, and Vanessa Lilak for her LIVE TELEVISION DIRECTING of the Hip Hop Brothers act in this year’s variety show.

Glenbrook South also took several first place awards. Joanie Barry took FIRST PLACE in LIVE TELEVISION DIRECTING for her direction of "Ring Them Bells" from the variety show. Joanie was also the only student at the festival to receive perfect scores from all three judges. Good job, Joanie!

Two GBS comedy narrative films TIED for FIRST PLACE: "Banana Noir," co-directed by Matt Krueger and Andrew McCarthy, and "Evanston vs. the Wildkits -- the 2008 Homecoming Video", directed by Mark Helenowski.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences gave Andrew McCarthy an honorable mention for his script of "Banana Noir." Also honored as co-writers of the script were Ryan Frohlich, Vaness Lilak and Dillon Waldron.

Finally, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences gave Mark Helenowski and Kyle Paek FIRST PLACE in the Chicago Student Emmy Competition with their news feature story "A Second Life." They were honored Friday night at the Chicago Emmy Silver Circle Banquet held at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel.

It has been a great year for Glenbrook South Television. The Television and Film classes are taught by Mr. Mark Ferguson.

GBS Math Team Earns 12th in State

The Glenbrook South Math team earned a 12th place finish in this year’s state Math Competition.

Place Winners Include:

-The Junior/Senior 8 Person team of Jenny McGarrity, JiHee Lee, Dennis Moon, Henry Zhou, Michael Adamski, Andy Jeong, Michael Tarczon, and Fred Tye finished 2nd in state.

-The Junior/Senior 2 Person team of Andrew Jacobs and Michael Tarczon finished 2nd in state.

-On the Senior Individual test, Michael Tarczon finished fourth and Andrew Jacobs finished 2nd in state.

GBS Student-To-Student Outreach Program "Bridges" the Gap Between Middle and High School

Over the past two weeks, Student-to-Student members have visited Springman, Attea, and Field Middle Schools as part of the club’s annual Bridge Program. Now in its ninth year, Bridge continues to be a huge success as it brings over 40 high school leaders into contact with over 500 eighth graders.

Spirits were high as each day of Bridge began with a fun group game involving trivia, cheering contests and dancing. Later, eleven senior leaders sat down for a panel discussion to talk about why and how they choose not to use drugs and alcohol. They shared some of their best high school memories and offered advice to the soon-to-be freshmen.
The day ended with breakout sessions in which eighth graders could get all their questions answered about the academic, extra-curricular and social worlds at GBS.
We’re proud of all the Student-to-Student members who are “bridging” the gap between middle school and high school and showing the next generation of GBS students that it is fun and rewarding to be drug- and alcohol-free at Glenbrook South.

GBS Boy's Gymnastics Wins Conference Championship

In their best effort of the year, the GBS Boy's Gymnastics team scored a season high of 142.9 and won the conference meet and conference title outright. GBS entered the meet in a three way tie for first place and won to come away with an undisputed first place.

GBS Journalism Team - 6th in the State!

The Glenbrook South Journalism team, comprised of members of the yearbook and newspaper staffs, finished tied for 6th in the state of Illinois at the IHSA journalism competition on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston Friday, May 1.

Senior Corinne Chin won the state championship in Review Writing;
junior Alyssa Rooks took third in Newspaper Design;
senior Kelly Nelson and junior Jennifer McGarrity finished fifth in Yearbook Theme Development;
senior John Montesantos finished sixth in Newspaper Sports Writing.

Other team members who qualified for state were Najah Bhatty, Hannah Madans, and Anna Carlson.

GBS Artists Recognized for Excellence at the Creative Self-Expression Show

On Wednesday, April 22, 2009 The Great Frame Up of Niles, IL hosted theCreative Self-Expression Show which showcases the artistic talents of some of the country’s finest high school students; GBS being one of them.

Through the Creative Self-Expression Show, our students have an opportunity to compete for awards and prizes not only at the local level, but also at a National level. Participating The Great Frame Up stores across the country will submit one local winner from each participating high school to the National Contest. All art that is submitted to the National Competition will be judged by our Spokesperson, Ms. Jane Seymour, and a panel of judges for an opportunity to win a $2000 scholarship.

The Great Frame Up of Niles hosted the work of our talented GBS students. Among all 30 entries, there were 4 categories: Painting, Drawing, Photography, and Jewelry. Under each category there was a first place winner awarded a participation certificate along with a $50.00 check.

Along with these outstanding awards, there was an award titled "Best of Show" given to the one student who's work was voted by professional artists as the best in show. That student is Inhwan Choi! Being awarded best in show, Inhwan's painting will be traveling to the national competition to then be judged amongst other best in show artworks throughout the entire nation. Good luck Inhwan!

Congratulations to the Etruscan yearbook staff! At this weekend's national journalism convention in Phoenix, the 2008 yearbook--'know no limit' was named a national Pacemaker (considered by many to be the Pulitzer prize of scholastic journalism). The book also earned fourth place in the Best of Show competition.

Glenbrook Musical, Guys and Dolls, April 29-May 2

Guys and Dolls, the 2009 Glenbrook Musical, opens Wednesday, April 29 and continues through Saturday, May 2. A musical comedy, Guys and Dolls will be staged at Glenbrook South High School and will feature a live orchestra and the talent of Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High School students. Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Interact Club Asks for Help to Brighten Prom

Interact Club is sponsoring the Glass Slipper Project. Until Friday, April 17th, they will be collecting prom dresses, dress shoes, accessories, and any unopened make-up for girls in Chicago who cannot afford these items for their prom.

If you have any of these items please bring them into the nurse's office by the 17th. They will then be taken to Zengeler's Cleaners in Northbrook, cleaned and sorted, and then delivered to two outlets stores in the city where they will be available for the girls for free.

Please help these girls out if you can.

2009 Honor Societies Induction Ceremony

Glenbrook South High School held its 2009 Honor Societies Induction Ceremony in the Norman E. Watson Auditorium on the evening of April 7th. 93 juniors and seniors were inducted into the Cum Laude Society, an exclusive society which honors students for exceptional academic achievements. 146 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society, an organization that recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in academics, co-curricular participation, community service, and character. The evening's program included an address from the 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient, Mrs. Hilary Rosenthal, musical selections from NINE, Chamber Singers, the Glenbrook Jazz Combo, and various GBS Instrumentalists. Congratulations to all!

GBS Debate Teams Counted Among Elite Teams at Nationals

Congratulations to sophomores Colin Bianchi and Mitchell Bigelow who finished second in the nation this past weekend in novice debate at the Novice and Junior Varsity National Championships, held in Atlanta, GA. The novice division is reserved for students in their first year of competitive debate.

Bianchi and Bigelow beat teams from around the country, including head to head match-ups with teams from Georgia, New York, Missouri, and Texas.

Congratulations also goes out to three other Glenbrook South teams that place in the top fifteen in the novice division. Sophomores Jonathan Choi and Philip Han finished fifth in the nation in the Junior Varsity division and sophomores Samantha Varney and Alyssa Zimmer placed ninth.

To honor Illinois' fallen soldiers, Specialist Norman L. Cain, III (Oregon, IL), Specialist Robert M. Weinger (Round Lake Beach, IL) and Sergeant Christopher P. Abeyta (Midlothian, IL), Governor Quinn has requested that all United States and Illinois flags be at half-staff from sunrise, Wednesday, March 25, 2009 through sunset, Saturday, March 28, 2009.

The three soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Woodstock, IL. The young men were all part of the Illinois National Guard's large scale involvement in eastern Afghanistan.

GBS Debate - Top Ranked Public School in the Country!

The National Debate Coaches Association has announced the final regular season national rankings for high school policy debate teams. The Glenbrook South team of junior Richard Day and junior Will Thibeau finished the regular invitational season third in the country. The Glenbrook South team of senior Colin Quinn and senior Alec Zimmer finished the regular season ranked thirteenth in the country.

Glenbrook South is the top ranked public school in the country and the only school to have two teams ranked in the top fifteen. Day/Thibeau are also the only team of two juniors ranked in the top thirty.

Glenbrook South will now start their postseason in their state championship and national championship competitions in the upcoming months. Best of luck to these talented Titans!

Interact Blood Drive an Outstanding Success!

The annual Interact Blood Drive with Life Source Blood Center drew in over 150 donors on Thursday, March 12th. 15 participants donated double red cells, and 163 units were collected overall (which is a 20% increase over last year). The GBS BPA team spent last weekend at State. The conference was run by VP of State Projects, Roya Naderi, and VP of the State Newsletter, Joe Lim. GBS helped run the successful State Project which raised over $3300 for the Illinois Special Olympics.

Dominik Cubelic, Ryan Bach, Ben Hengels and Chris DeLetto - 200-Yard Freestyle Relay State Champions. After setting the national record on Friday night, they surpassed their own mark on Saturday and lowered their record setting time to 1:22.15 from 1:22.63. The previous national record was 1:22.80. Glenbrook South High School Congratulates All-State Musicians

Twelve Glenbrook South music students performed at the Illinois Music Educators Association State Festival held January 29-31, in Peoria. Music students selected to perform at this All-State festival are among the best musicians in Illinois. The students initially had to qualify through the IMEA District VII Festival. From there, the qualifying students were named to the All-State Festival. At the All-State Festival, the students attended workshops and clinics, and rehearsed with their fellow All-State winners. Culminating the experience, they presented All-State and Honors Concerts in band, chorus and orchestra.

The GBS All-State musicians were Josh Propp, Ryan Kirby, Joseph Lewis, Robby Shellard, choral music; Kevin Golden, band; Corinne Chin, Neil Carson, Eric Mrugala and Dan Carson, orchestra; and Kristin Olsen, Turner Topping and John Splithoff in vocal jazz ensemble.

Student Art Exhibit, February 17-24

Glenbrook South student art work will be on display for one week, beginning Tuesday, February 17, through Tuesday, February 24, in the William H. Schreiner Lyceum. The exhibit includes the work of students in drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry, and photography courses. The art exhibit will be open to the community school days from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will also be an artists’ reception from 4 – 8 p.m., Friday, February 20, in the Lyceum. The community is invited to attend the reception, meet the artists and their teachers and enjoy the artwork. Art teachers Amie Elliott, Natalie Ingaunis, Stephanie Self and Kurt Webb have collaborated to organize and display some of the outstanding achievements of this year’s' art students at GBS.

Snow day extends school year by one day

Due to inclement weather and unsafe driving conditions, school was canceled Friday, December 19. Emergency days are built into our calendar at the end of the year and the last day of school is designated “tentative.” An additional day will be added to the 2008-09 school year. Assuming no further school closings, the last day of school will be Thursday, June 11. Please note:

This does not affect senior students – senior final exams and graduation (Sunday, June 7. 2009) remain the same.
Final exam dates for freshmen, sophomores and juniors will begin one day later: Tuesday-Thursday, June 9-11.

Expanded Summer Service Learning Opportunity

An expanded Summer Service Learning opportunity will be available to GBS and GBN high school students. Twenty juniors and seniors from each school can participate in a one-week service learning experience building a home in Bay Waveland, Mississippi, through Habitat for Humanity. This is the third year for this type of summer service learning opportunity and due to response, the number of participating students has been doubled. GBS JETS Team Earns 3rd

Congratulations to the the GBS team of Andrew Jacobs, Michael Tarczon, Alec Zimmer, and Jaehyun Cho competed in an event called the JETS TEAMS competition at IIT in Wheaton on Wednesday, February 11, 2009.

Out of 12 teams they finished 3rd in answering 80 multiple choice questions in 1.5 hrs concerning many different scientific areas focusing on theme parks. After lunch they competed in another 1.5 hr session where they responded to "free response" type questions where they had to solve problems and provide written solutions. These will be graded later and compared to every team across the country.

Yearbook named Pacemaker Award finalist

Once again the Glenbrook South yearbook, the 2008 "Etruscan" was named a Pacemaker Award finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association. The Glenbrook South Drama Department will present a children's theatre production of Hansel and Gretel: Extreme Makeover Edition. The play follows the timeless story of Hansel and Gretel, but through a decidedly modern point of view. IN THIS LOVING SPOOF, Hansel and Gretel are tired of being trapped in the same depressing fairy tale, so they contact a television reality star to give their story an extreme makeover! While Hansel and Gretel adjust to the modern world (using Post-It notes rather than bread crumbs, for example), the Grimm brothers and the wicked witch collaborate to return the story to the way it has always been told. Many characters experience transformations of some sort in this humorous adaptation from the original Grimm’s fairy tale. The play teaches many lessons, especially concerning sharing, kindness, and the power of inner beauty. This delightful play involves approximately 12 GBS performers and is approximately 60 minutes

The show dates are Friday, February 6, at 7:30 PM and Saturday, February 7, at 2:00 PM. Tickets are free to GBS staff and are available in the SAO. The play is appropriate for children (and adults) of all ages.

GBS Senior Brian Hansen Places 3rd in US Allround Championships

Glenbrook South High School senior, Brian Hansen of Glenview, and a member of the Northbrook Speedskating Club finished in 3rd place in the overall standings at the US Allround Championships held in Milwaukee Dec. 27-28, 2008.

His finish qualified him to skate in several winter World Cups held in Europe and also for a chance to earn a spot at the World Allround Championships a select meet with the top 24 skaters in the world.

His next race will be a semifinal held in Salt Lake City on Jan 10th and 11th with the top 6 Americans and the top 6 Canadians competing for 6 spots at the World Allround Championships.

Dear Dr. Riggle:

Please extend our heartfelt appreciation to the students of Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools who participated in this year's canned food drive. The Northfield Township Food Pantry is grateful to be one of the organizations that benefit from this effort.

The Pantry assists Township residents who are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families. Currently, over 420 families, representing over 1,200 people, are eligible to visit the Pantry each month. Canned food items are the foundation of our food distribution. Each year we are amazed at the number of cans that the students collect. We receive enough canned vegetables to last until next year's drive.

The Pantry relies entirely on support from the community in order to provide this much-needed assistance. It is comforting to know that the young people in our community support our belief that Hunger is Unacceptable in Our Community.

A special thank you to the organizers of this event. We know the hard work and time it takes to organize a food drive and we are grateful to them for all they do to make this event a success.

On behalf of the people who turn to the Pantry each month for assistance please thank the students who participated in this food drive. Their hard work and commitment to helping our neighbors in need is truly appreciated.

Mrs. Pouplikollas and the Hellenic Club want to extend their enormous thanks to the GBS Faculty and Staff who adopted a "Letter to Santa" from an under-privileged child: "We excelled way beyond our own expectation and that of the New Field School in Chicago that will be receiving our packages. They made 4 trips here on Wednesday, Dec 10th, and are going to have to make one more on Friday to finally pick-up the hundreds of beautifully wrapped gifts. We had a faculty member single handedly adopt 15 letters and another donate boxes of new trinkets that the students of the Hellenic Club worked hours to organize and wrap. Due to the wonderful generosity of all we had a spectacular inaugural year. We also raised hundreds of dollars to help fund Direct Effect Charities in Northbrook that spearheads not only the "Letters to Santa" project but many ventures all year. Give yourself a pat on the back GBS for a job that warms not only the recipient but also the donor."

The Glenbrook South Interact Club, together with United Cerebral Palsy of Chicago are conducting a Computer Electronics and Durable Medical Equipment Drive to help benefit students with disabilities. It is definitely a WIN/WIN proposition. If you have old computer equipment which is not being used or any durable medical equipment like crutches, wheel chairs, walkers, etc., they can be refurbished and put to use by child or an adult with a disability. You will receive documentation of your donation for tax purposes and your old hard drive memory will be removed.

So if you're planning on an upgrade this Holiday Season or if you have some computer or medical equipment that is not being used, please consider this opportunity. Donations will be accepted on January 10, 2009.

Peer Mentors Raise Money for Youth Services

Three Students Earn Special Scholarship

Congratulations to GBS students Aurea Mujica, Silvia Ramirez and Martha Haro for earning special scholarships during this year's Latino Summit.

This year neighboring school districts invited approximately 400 of their Latino students to take part in this summit, which was held at Harper College. During the summit, students listen to both a professional panel and a student panel. These panelists are all Latinos and go through great lengths to motivate students regarding school, college, obstacles faced, possibilities and ultimate triumphs if they continue with their education.

Students who have attended in the past are allowed to apply for a $500 scholarship as seniors. Some of the requirements are grades, G.P.A., economic need, contributions to school and community. Congratulations again to Aurea, Silvia and Martha who earned 3 of the 5 scholarships offered!

Senior Corinne Chin and Junior Buyana Ganbold Honored at Fall Journalism Convention

At the annual fall convention for the Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association, which was held this year in St. Louis, approximately 2,200 students from around the country competed in write-off competitions.

Senior Corinne Chin, along with only 116 other students from around the nation, earned a Superior in Review Writing.

THE CANDYMAN CAN GBS Canned Food Drive Underway Until Tuesday, November 25, 2008

The Holiday Season is a time for sharing. In honor of the holiday spirit, Glenbrook South High School wishes to inform you of the start of our 25th annual CANNED FOOD DRIVE. This year’s canned food drive theme is “THE CANDYMAN CAN.”

Proceeds will be directed to local and national charitable efforts such as: the Onward House (a Chicago settlement house), the Northfield Township Food Pantry, and Vital Bridges. This activity will serve the important purpose of benefitting the people dependent on these organizations for food. The canned food drive will be held through November 25th. Our Student Council has set the ambitious goal of a school wide collection of 100,002 cans. Monetary donations will also be accepted and added to the overall total.

Once again we are offering competitions for period 1 class totals, grade totals, and club totals. Prizes will include a free breakfast for the top three period 1 classes and a pizza party for the top club.

Jim Wolter has long been manning the soccer sidelines since 1974 as an assistant at Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools for seven years and as the head boys varsity soccer coach at Glenbrook South High School for the past 28 years. For over 35 years, whether attending the NSCAA national convention, going or hosting IHSSCA clinics, providing ideas to improve the Central Suburban League and IHSA meetings, or simply going to anything that involves soccer, Jim Wolter is a lifer. In fact, Jim along with his friend New Trier head boys soccer coach Craig Fairbairn worked as scoreboard operators in the very first IHSA boys state soccer final in 1972 at Hanson Stadium as a senior year student at Illinois State University.

His professionalism and philosophical ideals of “family, school, and soccer” resonates to his student-athletes and his entire coaching staff. This retired physical education teacher continues to educate the game on the areas of sportsmanship, technical ball skills, and being known as one of the best tacticians by his fellow peers. Jim lets the game come to him; he will ponder, execute new game plans, and makes adjustments so that his teams can simply compete in the ever tough Central Suburban League. As one coach said, “Jim simply gets the best out of his teams always, he may not always have the talent, but certainly they earn their respect and enjoy playing for a coach like him.”

Glenbrook South’s Principal Brian Wegley said “Jim Wolter’s passionate coaching for Glenbrook South High School over the past 28 years has focused on students’ growth as young men and as athletes. The positive foundation laid by Jim will serve our students for years into the future. I personally thank him for commitment and congratulate him on his retirement.”

Just this year, Jim has organized an IHSSCA clinic at Glenbrook South, attended the NSCAA Baltimore convention, organized a youth night, senior night, and a scholarship fundraiser, hosted regional playoffs, guided his boys team to the finals at the Rockton-Hononegah Indian State Cup Tournament, ran his 24th Annual Titan “Warm-Up” Invitational, and worked the Winning Mood Dutch camp in Oshkosh, Wisconsin this past summer.

Jim exudes the spirit and principles of our coaching association. From his humility, passion for competition, and insight from watching professional or collegiate matches, it brings a whole new perspective for at least 500 student-athletes he has taught in his coaching tenure. Hence, this only exemplifies the positive image that Jim Wolter brings for his nomination for Soccer Person of the Year and the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA).

Stew Witwer visits GBS!

Former GBS grad Stew Witwer visited for a quick hello in late October. While a student here, he was active in the theatre program ,and fronted a rock band.

After GBS, Stew attended Julliard School of Drama, and moved to California. He has appeared on ER, Jag and Cold Case (to name a few), and has had major roles in Battlestar Galactica (Lieutenant Alex "Crashdown” Quartararo) and "The Mist" (Wayne Jessup).

When he's not acting, he sings in "The Crashtones" which released the CD "Colorful of the Stereo" in 2006. He also voices and physicalizes the emporer's secret apprentice in the video game "The Force Unleashed" for LucasArts.

GBS Debators Dominate at University of Michigan Tournament

Congratulations to juniors Will Thibeau and Richard Day as they bested 130 teams from 15 states to win first place at the University of Michigan tournament this past weekend. Thibeau and Day beat the top-ranked team in the country from Atlanta, GA on a unanimous decision to win this nationally prestigous tournament.

Sophomores Colin Bianchi and Mitchell Bigelow finished second in the first-year division out of 70 teams from 10 states.

As a whole, GBS Debate had seven teams place at the tournament.

The GBS Family Dreamt Big and Surpassed our $100,000 Goal to Support Youth Services

In an incredible effort, Glenbrook South's own Dr. James Shellard hosted this telethon that raised over $105,000 from noon on Friday, November 7, 2008 until noon on Saturday, November 8, 2008. Thank you GBS Family for helping us reach our $100,000 goal.

GBS TV, under the direction of Mr. Mark Ferguson put on a professional grade show for this exceptional cause. In addition, Annie Kraus and Andrew McCarthy were the Master of Ceremonies in the Auditorium for the duration. Nancy Bloom from Youth Services also inspired us through the entire 24-hour event at GBS. She specifically shared her gratitude to students Annie Kraus and Kristin Olson for all they added to the planning team for this telethon.

Thank you to all within the GBS Family and Youth Services who helped make this dream a reality. Students painted a mural, entertained us with their musical gifts and shared their hearts as only Glenbrook South can. Faculty and staff shared the opportunities they provide students within their classrooms and beyond. Rich Winship and his amazing stage crew also created a terrific performance space throughout the entire show. Finally, thank you to all those in our outstanding community who helped give to support Youth Services. Take a look at businesses who donated food to this event to energize all involved.

GBS Cheerleaders Raise Money for Breast Cancer Awareness & Thank GBS Family

During the month of October, the Glenbrook South Cheerleaders took part in collecting donations for Breast Cancer Awareness. The Cheerleaders of GBS would like to extend their gratitude to all those who donated to this cause. Every penny you put forth contributed to the American Cancer Society. The Cheerleaders goal this year was to exceed $3000.00 and, that they did! A total of 3,950 dollars was raised this year to beat Breast Cancer .

They topped off their volunteer services by taking part in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" this past weekend in Rockford. They and a thousand of other walkers all gathered together toward a common goal: the day when breast cancer no longer affects those we love. Again, they would like to thank everybody who contributed and made a difference. Remember, Hope starts with you!! Thank you Glenbrook South Family!!

GBS Titan Football Earns 4th Seed in State Playoff Birth

Congratulations to the GBS Titan Football team for completing their regular season 8-1 with a 28 - 13 win over New Trier on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

A Midsummer Night's Dream at GBS Wednesday - Saturday

Come enjoy the GBS fall play, A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. This comedy is directed by John Knight and is set in the Polynesian Islands just after WWII. The cast took authentic hula lessons as well as studied the culture of the indigenous peoples of Hawaii, Tahiti and New Zealand. The set represents a lush tropical jungle, including a cave and a waterfall.

Performances are: Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 29 & 30, at 7:30p.m.; Friday, Oct 31, at 4:00 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2:00 p.m.

U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Visits The Glenbrooks on Monday, October 27, 2008

The students of Glenbrook STAND Against Genocide, a student run organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to help ease the devastation of genocide, is hosting a very exciting event.

On Monday, October 27, U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Rich Williamson will be presenting a discussion on the crisis in Darfur. The presentation will be held in the CPA at Glenbrook North, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Williamson holds an influential place in the United States government, especially in dealing with foreign affairs. He has served in senior positions under Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush as the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations at the Department of State, and an Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs.

Ambassador Williamson has been on the ground in Sudan, as well as in Darfur. He is the highest ranking United States official addressing the genocide in Sudan today. This opportunity is an exceptional chance for all of us to learn what the United States is actually doing to prevent violence and bring peace to the Sudan.

Please come to this event, and encourage your students to do so as well.

Dan Seals & Mark Kirk Addressed GBS Students on Monday, October 20, 2008

Students enrolled in Political Science, several U.S. History classes, and Peer Group Leaders at GBS were treated to the opportunity to hear from 10th Congressional District of Illinois candidates Dan Seals and Mark Kirk in the Dr. William H. Schreiner Lyceum.

Each candidate gave an overview of how they first became involved in seeking political office, then presented an overview of their positions on critical issues facing the nation. The majority of the 50 minute session was devoted to answering student questions about such topics as the war in Iraq, ways to resolve the current financial crisis, energy policy, affordable health care, national security issues, stem cell research, and the high cost of college education. Students enjoyed listening to two dynamic candidates who have dedicated themselves to serving the public good. Both candidates seemed to enjoy the thoughtfulness of the questions presented by GBS students.

Thanks to both candidates for spending quality time with our students and presenting their views on the issues.

Two Young GBS Golfers Place at State

In the IHSA State Golf Tournament:

*Sophomore Steve Petchenk shot a 73 on Friday and an 82 on Saturday for a 155. This score earned him 35th place overall.

*Freshman Quinn Prchal shot an 80 on Friday and a 76 on Saturday. This score earned him 38th place overall.

Congratulations to these two boys, our coaches and to our boys' golf team for a great season.

GBS Takes on IVD Challenge

GBS teachers Neil Schmidgall, Mike Stancik, Steve Kornick, and Lee Fiorio have led students in the IVD Challenge last year and this year. Students Michael Hall(Sr.), Samantha Kane(Sr.), Sean Grandfield(Sr.), Dan Uhler(Jr.), Matt Krueger(Jr.), Nolan Henrickson(So.), and Stephen Hansen(So.) have partnered with GBS grad Tom King, a product engineer with ITW, and Engineering Professor Dave Geller from Oakton C.C.

During the October 5th weekend they had a very successful performance run in Detroit. During the week of October 13th they will be showing off their car to over 300 Attea and Springman students. Work is still ongoing as students will now add the GPS portion along with a set of informational LEDs and ITW's switch. Good luck to the team as they then head to the Convergence Conference in Detroit from October 20, 2008 through October 22, 2008 to show their car to real automotive engineers. Thank you to our teachers, ITW and Oakton C.C. for making this opporunity available for our students.

GBS Clubs Make Blankets for Service Men and Women

The Interact Club, Key Club and Circle of Friends recently completed patriotic blankets to send US troops.

Julie Spellman, one of the GBS Circle of Friends sponsors, shared that she loves these events because, "in times that make us feel helpless, service reminds us that there is always hope, especially when we unite together." JKB Leadership Breakfast

85% of teenagers go to other teens for advice when they have problems or a crisis. On Friday, October 3, 2008 our GBS leaders were further armed with leadership skills and reminded of their responsibilities during this year’s leadership breakfast. Student athletes heard from Ms. Colleen Braid, Mr. Jim Torsiello and Mr. Brian Wegley throughout the morning.

The video 212 degrees was featured and athletes were asked what they can do to add the extra degree to their teams this year.

In addition, our JKB student leaders put on sessions on Stereo Typing and Team Unity, Role Models and the Lou Holtz Questions and The Helping Skill.

GBS vs. GBN Soccer & Great Cause - Saturday, September 27, 2008

This Saturday, September 27th our GBS boys varsity soccer team will take on Glenbrook North at 7:00PM in John Davis Stadium.

More importantly, in cooperation with the boys/girls soccer programs and peer groups of each school, we will collecting funds for the Jennifer L. Snyder Scholarship Fund.

Jennifer, a student at Glenbrook North High School, tragically passed away last month as a member of the Glenbrook United soccer team. Peer group leaders will be coming around with cups to collect funds, in return, a Moe's Southwest Grill discount coupon and a raffle ticket will be given for halftime. Those who can not attend, a Chicago Fire bucket will placed in our Business Education office in Room 182.

Construction Continues on Pfingsten

Johnson Paving, the company contracted by Cook County to complete work on Pfingsten has remained in contact with GBS regarding its continued work. The rough course in front of GBS will be completed Monday or Tuesday of this week between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. They will then raise drains along Pfingsten and hope to put a final course down by the end of this week.

Please continue to give yourself plenty of time to enter school during this construction. Though they have worked well with GBS and are avoiding our most busy times, there will certainly be some disruption to traffic along Pfingsten.

We thank Johnson's Paving for continuing to keep us informed and for working to minimize the impact on our families during this badly needed roadwork.

2008 Spirit Assembly Boosts GBS to Big Win

On Friday, August 29, 2008 Glenbrook South High School held our annual Spirit Day Assembly. 2600 students filled the stadium and cheered Principal Wegley, Tommy the Titan and Mr. Rockrohr home.

The GBS Band played. The GBS Poms, De La Cru and our Cheerleaders all danced a group number and Coach Noll addressed our entire student body after the football team rushed the field through the band's gauntlet and led GBS in the singing of our school song.

Students were outstanding and our cheers reached Glenbrook North - which our football team defeated 35 to 7 on Friday night.

Power Outage and Early Release

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2008 power went out in Glenview in the area that included Glenbrook South High School. The power outage was due to a downed power line in the La Fontaine subdivision. Glenbrook South High School immediately contacted Commonwealth Edison who estimated that the power would not be restored until after 3:00 p.m. Police secured the area surrounding the downed power line and manned the light at Pfingsten and East Lake Avenue, and buses arrived on campus by 1:30 p.m. Superintendent Mike Riggle sent out a message to parents, and school was released at approximately 1:40 p.m.

At this point in time, power has been restored and school will be in session tomorrow. Athletic events will occur this evening as will the regularly scheduled band practice.

Thank you to the Glenview Police Department and the Glenbrook South faculty and staff for their outstanding help keeping our students safe during this time. Thank you also to our students and families for their orderly and respectful response to this situation.

School Begins - Pfingsten Paving

Dear GBS,

Welcome to the 2008 – 2009 school year! I am truly excited for this year and look forward to all our students will accomplish academically and within our extracurricular offerings.

School begins Wednesday, August 27, 2008. As you know Pfingsten Road continues to be resurfaced. Though GBS has communicated our start and end times with Cook County’s paving company to minimize the impact this needed work has on our families, please leave yourselves plenty of time for travel to and from school. Please also be patient and begin this year safely.

I will continue to email updates on work schedules as they are received from the paving company. We have been told that no lanes will be closed near the high school tomorrow, but note that there are no distinct lane lines, so please drive carefully.

Our athletic season is up and running and we wish all our teams well. This Friday our boys' soccer team plays Lake View at home at 5:30 p.m. and our football team plays GBN at GBN at 7:00 p.m. Please come out and support our teams. Students, remember that Fridays are spirit days. Please fill our halls with blue and gold clothing.

GBS Tennis Team Takes 11th in State

Congratulations to the GBS Tennis Team for finishing 11th in state. State Qualifiers were doubles players, Adam Teitelbaum & Vedran Svraka as well as Tommy McNichols & Fred Tye. Junior, Michael Moore finihshed 5th in State in Singles and was named First Team All State for the second year in a row.

Congratulations to coach Larry Faulkner and the entire tennis team.
