Summer School Registration - Still classes available!

There are still classes available for the 2009 Glenbrook Summer School to be held at Glenbrook North. Please go to http://summerschool.glenbrook225.org/ for information.

Snow day extends school year by one day

Due to inclement weather and unsafe driving conditions, school was canceled Friday, December 19. Emergency days are built into our calendar at the end of the year and the last day of school is designated “tentative.” An additional day will be added to the 2008-09 school year. Assuming no further school closings, the last day of school will be Thursday, June 11. Please note:

• This does not affect senior students – senior final exams and graduation (Sunday, June 7. 2009) remain the same.
• Final exam dates for freshmen, sophomores and juniors will begin one day later: Tuesday-Thursday, June 9-11.

Expanded Summer Service Learning Opportunity

An expanded Summer Service Learning opportunity will be available to GBS and GBN high school students. Twenty juniors and seniors from each school can participate in a one-week service learning experience building a home in Bay Waveland, Mississippi, through Habitat for Humanity. This is the third year for this type of summer service learning opportunity and due to response, the number of participating students has been doubled. Registration for 2009-10 classes

Throughout the month of February, current Glenbrook South freshmen, sophomores, juniors and incoming freshmen will register for the 2009-10 classes. Students receive materials in advance so they can discuss class choices with their parents, and then register for classes through the Guidance Department as scheduled. For incoming freshmen, GBS counselors visit the junior high schools to provide necessary information prior to registration. Counselors will meet individually with each incoming freshman student and register them for classes February 18, 20, 27, and March 6.

Hansel and Gretel: Extreme Makeover Edition on Friday, February 6, 2009 & Saturday, February 7, 2009

Dear Glenbrook Family:

The Glenbrook South Drama Department will present a children's theatre production of Hansel and Gretel: Extreme Makeover Edition. The play follows the timeless story of Hansel and Gretel, but through a decidedly modern point of view. IN THIS LOVING SPOOF, Hansel and Gretel are tired of being trapped in the same depressing fairy tale, so they contact a television reality star to give their story an extreme makeover! While Hansel and Gretel adjust to the modern world (using Post-It notes rather than bread crumbs, for example), the Grimm brothers and the wicked witch collaborate to return the story to the way it has always been told. Many characters experience transformations of some sort in this humorous adaptation from the original Grimm’s fairy tale. The play teaches many lessons, especially concerning sharing, kindness, and the power of inner beauty. This delightful play involves approximately 12 GBS performers and is approximately 60 minutes

The show dates are Friday, February 6, at 7:30 PM and Saturday, February 7, at 2:00 PM. Tickets are free to GBS staff and are available in the SAO. The play is appropriate for children (and adults) of all ages.

Glenbrook South High School & District 225 Closed on Friday, December 19, 2008

District 225 schools and offices are closed Friday, December 19, 2008 due to inclement weather. School will resume after Winter Break on Monday, January 5, 2009.

A list of events along with their status for Friday, December 19th and Saturday, December 20th will be on the GBS website and will be updated throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.

GBN & GBS Students Receive Heartfelt Appreciation

Dear Dr. Riggle:

Please extend our heartfelt appreciation to the students of Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High Schools who participated in this year's canned food drive. The Northfield Township Food Pantry is grateful to be one of the organizations that benefit from this effort.

The Pantry assists Township residents who are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families. Currently, over 420 families, representing over 1,200 people, are eligible to visit the Pantry each month. Canned food items are the foundation of our food distribution. Each year we are amazed at the number of cans that the students collect. We receive enough canned vegetables to last until next year's drive.

The Pantry relies entirely on support from the community in order to provide this much-needed assistance. It is comforting to know that the young people in our community support our belief that Hunger is Unacceptable in Our Community.

A special thank you to the organizers of this event. We know the hard work and time it takes to organize a food drive and we are grateful to them for all they do to make this event a success.

On behalf of the people who turn to the Pantry each month for assistance please thank the students who participated in this food drive. Their hard work and commitment to helping our neighbors in need is truly appreciated.

Computer & Medical Equipment Recycling Drive

DATE: January 10th, 2009

The Glenbrook South Interact Club, together with United Cerebral Palsy of Chicago are conducting a Computer Electronics and Durable Medical Equipment Drive to help benefit students with disabilities. It is definitely a WIN/WIN proposition. If you have old computer equipment which is not being used or any durable medical equipment like crutches, wheel chairs, walkers, etc., they can be refurbished and put to use by child or an adult with a disability. You will receive documentation of your donation for tax purposes and your old hard drive memory will be removed.

So if you're planning on an upgrade this Holiday Season or if you have some computer or medical equipment that is not being used, please consider this opportunity. Donations will be accepted on January 10, 2009.

If you would like documentation of your donation for tax purposes, please drop your equipment off the morning of January 10, between 9:30 am and 2:00 pm.

Volunteers will be on site to help you.

The GBS Family Dreamt Big and Surpassed our $100,000 Goal to Support Youth Services

In an incredible effort, Glenbrook South's own Dr. James Shellard hosted this telethon that raised over $105,000 from noon on Friday, November 7, 2008 until noon on Saturday, November 8, 2008. Thank you GBS Family for helping us reach our $100,000 goal.

GBS TV, under the direction of Mr. Mark Ferguson put on a professional grade show for this exceptional cause. In addition, Annie Kraus and Andrew McCarthy were the Master of Ceremonies in the Auditorium for the duration. Nancy Bloom from Youth Services also inspired us through the entire 24-hour event at GBS. She specifically shared her gratitude to students Annie Kraus and Kristin Olson for all they added to the planning team for this telethon.

Thank you to all within the GBS Family and Youth Services who helped make this dream a reality. Students painted a mural, entertained us with their musical gifts and shared their hearts as only Glenbrook South can. Faculty and staff shared the opportunities they provide students within their classrooms and beyond. Rich Winship and his amazing stage crew also created a terrific performance space throughout the entire show. Finally, thank you to all those in our outstanding community who helped give to support Youth Services. Take a look at businesses who donated food to this event to energize all involved.

GBS Boys' Water Polo Team Earns 3rd in State

The GBS Boys' Water Polo Team earned 3rd in the state at Stevenson HS on Saturday, May 17th. Congratulations to the team for their amazing season and for claiming 3rd in the state by defeating Sandburg HS 7 - 6! See the meet results or see photos (see 25 - 29 for GBS) from the Tribune.

Schedule Update

All after school activities and athletic practices and contests have been canceled for Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Incoming Freshman Orientation Night has also been canceled and rescheduled for next Wednesday, February 13th at 7:30 p.m. The Incoming Freshman Academy Information Night scheduled for Wednesday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m. will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lyceum. The meeting will conclude in time for families to participate in the orientation meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

For the remainder of today, we will follow an abridged schedule in which the remaining periods (4 through 8) will meet for 35 minutes. There will be no open lunch. School will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. For those who normally take the bus, bus routes will be running.

The schedule for the remainder of the day will be:

Safe Passage - Illinois Graduated License Update

Clarification about the new Illinois Driver's License law's impact on permits and licenses issued before the January 2008 include the following:

Permit
The only grandfather provisions for the new licensing program are for permits. Anyone whose permit is dated/obtained before January 2008 will follow the old permit's guidelines - the permit holder will still be able to obtain a license after three months.

License
For driver's license, if you are 16 or 17, you are bound by the new laws regardless of whether the license was obtained before January of 2008. This means a year from date of issue (or 18 if it comes first). Of chief concern are:

- Night driving Sun-Thurs - 10pm to 6:00 am Fri.-Sat - 11:00pm - 6:00am
- One passenger under age 20 unless immediate family member - extends six months with
a moving violation
- No cell phone until age 19

College Financing Night - Wednesday, January 9, 2008, 7:00 p.m. - Auditorium

For Junior and Senior Parents, don't miss this opportunity presented by Financial Aid Directors from area colleges and universities. Junior parents will have their own financial aid overview workshop and senior parents will have the option of attending a FAFSA completion workshop or a workshop regarding alternatives in college financing.

GBS Shatters Canned Food Drive Record

By collecting 130,819 cans, the GBS family has collectively shattered the canned food drive record and their own goal of 100,001 cans for this year. Congratulations and thank you to all who contributed to help families in need have a wonderful Thanksgiving. GBS family, your generosity is impressive!

Pace Bus Route 210 Still Running!

Principal Brian Wegley and Village President Kerry Cummings worked with State Representative Elizabeth Coulson to share concerns about the proposed cut of a Pace bus route that has served the transportation needs of several Glenbrook South students. At 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2007, Representative Coulson called Principal Wegley and informed him that temporary funding was secured by our representatives to keep busses running until a final vote can be accomplished in Springfield. As a result, the 210 bus that was scheduled to stop running this coming Monday will continue to serve our students. Thanks to Kerry Cummings and Representative Coulson for working on Glenview's behalf!
