GBS Artists Recognized for Excellence at the Creative Self-Expression Show

On Wednesday, April 22, 2009 The Great Frame Up of Niles, IL hosted theCreative Self-Expression Show which showcases the artistic talents of some of the country’s finest high school students; GBS being one of them.

Through the Creative Self-Expression Show, our students have an opportunity to compete for awards and prizes not only at the local level, but also at a National level. Participating The Great Frame Up stores across the country will submit one local winner from each participating high school to the National Contest. All art that is submitted to the National Competition will be judged by our Spokesperson, Ms. Jane Seymour, and a panel of judges for an opportunity to win a $2000 scholarship.

The Great Frame Up of Niles hosted the work of our talented GBS students. Among all 30 entries, there were 4 categories: Painting, Drawing, Photography, and Jewelry. Under each category there was a first place winner awarded a participation certificate along with a $50.00 check.

These winners included:
  • Viky Kryvanos-Drawing
  • Inhwan Choi-Painting
  • Mallery Boczek-Jewelry
  • Nina Miceli-Photography

Along with these outstanding awards, there was an award titled "Best of Show" given to the one student who's work was voted by professional artists as the best in show. That student is Inhwan Choi! Being awarded best in show, Inhwan's painting will be traveling to the national competition to then be judged amongst other best in show artworks throughout the entire nation. Good luck Inhwan!

GBS Yearbook Wins National Award!

Congratulations to the Etruscan yearbook staff! At this weekend's national journalism convention in Phoenix, the 2008 yearbook--'know no limit' was named a national Pacemaker (considered by many to be the Pulitzer prize of scholastic journalism). The book also earned fourth place in the Best of Show competition.

In national write-off competitions, seven student journalists earned honors:

Glenbrook Musical, Guys and Dolls, April 29-May 2

Guys and Dolls, the 2009 Glenbrook Musical, opens Wednesday, April 29 and continues through Saturday, May 2. A musical comedy, Guys and Dolls will be staged at Glenbrook South High School and will feature a live orchestra and the talent of Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South High School students. Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Interact Club Asks for Help to Brighten Prom

Interact Club is sponsoring the Glass Slipper Project. Until Friday, April 17th, they will be collecting prom dresses, dress shoes, accessories, and any unopened make-up for girls in Chicago who cannot afford these items for their prom.

If you have any of these items please bring them into the nurse's office by the 17th. They will then be taken to Zengeler's Cleaners in Northbrook, cleaned and sorted, and then delivered to two outlets stores in the city where they will be available for the girls for free.

Please help these girls out if you can.

2009 Honor Societies Induction Ceremony

Glenbrook South High School held its 2009 Honor Societies Induction Ceremony in the Norman E. Watson Auditorium on the evening of April 7th. 93 juniors and seniors were inducted into the Cum Laude Society, an exclusive society which honors students for exceptional academic achievements. 146 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society, an organization that recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in academics, co-curricular participation, community service, and character. The evening's program included an address from the 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient, Mrs. Hilary Rosenthal, musical selections from NINE, Chamber Singers, the Glenbrook Jazz Combo, and various GBS Instrumentalists. Congratulations to all!

GBS Debate Teams Counted Among Elite Teams at Nationals

Congratulations to sophomores Colin Bianchi and Mitchell Bigelow who finished second in the nation this past weekend in novice debate at the Novice and Junior Varsity National Championships, held in Atlanta, GA. The novice division is reserved for students in their first year of competitive debate.

Bianchi and Bigelow beat teams from around the country, including head to head match-ups with teams from Georgia, New York, Missouri, and Texas.

Congratulations also goes out to three other Glenbrook South teams that place in the top fifteen in the novice division. Sophomores Jonathan Choi and Philip Han finished fifth in the nation in the Junior Varsity division and sophomores Samantha Varney and Alyssa Zimmer placed ninth.
