Once a year GBS AP European History students get to go back in time.
After preparing in depth research, the students replicate an 18th century Enlightenment Salon - complete with conversation, artistic performances, and discussions of the major issues and topics of that past time. Students research a prominent 18th century figure from the fields of philosophy, the arts, and government, then role play their character during a three hour in- school field trip experience. Examples of characters for research and role play are such luminaries as philosophers - John Locke and David Hume, musicians - Mozart and Vivaldi, scientists - Isaac Newton and John Harrison, and political leaders - Catherine the Great and Frederick the Great. Students always make lasting connections between people, time, and ideas, and also have a good deal of intellectual fun during the Salon experience. This year’s AP European History Enlightenment Salons were held on November 15 and 28.
